Why smoke smell lingers
Smoke particles are small and travel on heat and air currents into insulation, carpet, drapes, cabinets and wall cavities. Odor keeps coming back on warm or humid days until the source residue is removed or neutralized.
Clean first, then deodorize
Air fresheners and sprays only mask odor. The first step is removing the residue that holds it, then treating what remains. Contractors usually combine several methods depending on the materials and whether the home is occupied.
- Cleaning of residue from surfaces and contents
- Thermal fogging to reach the same places smoke travelled
- Hydroxyl generators, which can run in occupied spaces
- Ozone treatment in unoccupied spaces only
- Sealing of cleaned surfaces that still hold odor
- HVAC cleaning and filter replacement
Wildfire smoke and neighboring fires
Smoke from a nearby wildfire or a fire in an attached unit can leave odor and fine residue throughout a home with no flames inside it. The same cleaning and deodorization methods apply.
Safety notes
Ozone can harm people, pets and plants, so ozone treatments are done only in empty spaces with re-entry timed by the contractor. Ask which method they plan to use and how long you need to stay out.
Before the call
Keep windows open when weather allows, replace the HVAC filter, and note which rooms and items smell strongest.
Questions
Will an ozone machine fix the smell on its own?
Ozone can help, but it works best after residue is cleaned and is used only in unoccupied spaces. On its own it often leaves odor that returns.
Can smoke odor be removed from clothes and furniture?
Many items respond to cleaning and deodorization. The contractor explains what they expect after seeing the items.
Is this only for house fires?
No. It also covers odor from nearby wildfires, a fire in an attached unit, and smoke from long-term smoking indoors.
