Sewer Backup Cleanup

When a main sewer line backs up, raw sewage comes up through the lowest drains in the house, usually a basement floor drain, shower or tub. Water Damage Restore connects homeowners with independent contractors who clean up and disinfect after sewer backups as Category 3 biohazard work.

Signs of a main line backup

Water or sewage coming up in more than one fixture at once, especially the lowest ones; gurgling drains; a toilet that bubbles when the washing machine drains. Heavy rain can overload municipal sewers and push water back into homes.

Why it is a biohazard

Sewage is Category 3 water under the IICRC S500 standard. It carries bacteria, viruses and parasites, and contaminates every porous material it touches.

How the cleanup works

Crews wear protective equipment and contain the affected area before removing waste. Porous materials such as carpet, pad, lower drywall and insulation that touched sewage are typically removed and disposed of. Hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, then the area is dried.

  • Containment and protective equipment
  • Extraction of sewage and standing water
  • Removal of contaminated porous materials
  • Cleaning and disinfection of floors, walls and contents
  • Structural drying and odor control

The line itself

Clearing, camera inspection or repair of the sewer line is plumbing work and is separate from the cleanup. Ask a plumber or the municipality about backflow valves if backups are recurring.

Before the call

Stop using water in the house so more does not go down the drains. Keep children and pets away, and do not run fans in the area.

Questions

Can I keep using the toilets during a backup?

No. Any water sent down the drains can come back up. Stop using water until the line is cleared.

Will the contractor clear the sewer line?

No. This service covers cleanup and disinfection. Clearing or repairing the line is plumbing work.

Can carpet be saved after a sewer backup?

Carpet and pad that touched sewage are generally removed under the industry standard. The contractor explains scope after inspecting.
