Attic Mold Removal

Attic mold often grows for months before anyone sees it, usually as dark staining across the underside of the roof deck. Water Damage Restore connects homeowners with independent contractors who remove mold from attic sheathing, framing and insulation.

Why attics grow mold

Warm, moist air from the house rises into the attic through gaps around lights, fans and the attic hatch. In cold weather that moisture condenses on the underside of the roof sheathing. Bathroom or dryer vents that end in the attic, blocked soffit vents and past roof leaks add to it.

What attic mold looks like

Gray, black or white staining on the roof deck, often heaviest on the north side or near vents and the ridge, frost on nails in winter, and damp or matted insulation. A musty smell upstairs can be the first sign.

How attic mold is removed

Attic remediation usually focuses on cleaning wood rather than tearing it out. Depending on the extent of growth, contractors may HEPA vacuum and wipe, use abrasive methods such as soda or dry ice blasting, or sand affected areas, and may then apply a coating to the treated wood.

  • Containment of the attic hatch and living space below
  • HEPA vacuuming and cleaning of sheathing and rafters
  • Abrasive blasting or sanding where growth is heavy
  • Removal and bagging of mold-affected insulation
  • Cleanup of debris from the attic floor

The ventilation question

Mold returns if the moisture source is not dealt with. Rerouting a bath fan, sealing air leaks or improving attic ventilation are separate projects. Ask the contractor what they observe so you can plan the fix with the right trade.

Before the call

Note whether the roof has leaked recently, where vents terminate, and whether insulation looks wet. Avoid disturbing insulation or growth, and keep the attic hatch closed.

Questions

Is roof repair part of attic mold removal?

No. This service covers removing the mold. Roof repairs and ventilation changes are separate trades.

Does all the insulation have to come out?

Not always. The contractor decides after seeing how far growth and moisture reached, and discusses removal with you first.

Is mold testing included?

No. Testing and inspection are a separate specialty and are not part of what this site connects you with.
